 |
|
| |
|
Here are ten rules on what to eat and drink and how to exercise, which will help you to obtain the best results for the type of Bariatric Surgery chosen. Your commitment to a new way of eating is crucial for the success of your surgery. |
|
| |
| |
|
| Rule N º 1: Eat only five small meals a day |
| |
The surgery creates a small stomach bag,
with an approximate capacity of only half a cup (3 to 4
ounces) of food. If you try to eat more than this at once,
you may experience nausea or vomiting. If you routinely
eat excessively, this small stomach bag may stretch. This
will cancel the effect of the operation. Frequent vomiting
can also cause certain complications in the case of the
gastric band, such as displacement of the stomach. You will
have to learn how much food can be contained comfortably
in the stomach bag, and not exceed that amount. |
|
| |
| |
| |
| Rule Nº 2: Eat slowly and chew thoroughly |
| |
Food will be able to pass through the small stomach bag
only after being chewed into very small pieces. Remember
to always devote more time to your meals and chew your food
thoroughly (approximately 15 to 20 times per mouthful). |
|
| |
| |
| |
| Rule Nº 3: Stop eating as soon as you feel satisfied |
| |
As soon as your stomach is full, your body
receives a signal that you have had enough. However, the
recognition of this signal requires some time. If you eat
very quickly, you may eat more than you need. This may cause
nausea and vomiting. Take your time at meals. Try to recognize
the feeling of satiety and then stop eating immediately. |
|
| |
| |
| |
| Rule Nº 4: Do not drink while you are eating |
| |
Your surgery will only be successful if
you consume solid foods. If you drink while eating, the
food that you have consumed will become liquid and the effectiveness
of your surgery will be decreased enormously. You must not
drink anything for one to two hours after every meal. This
allows you to maintain the feeling of satiety for the longest
possible time. |
|
| |
| |
| |
| Rule Nº 5: Do not eat between meals |
| |
After a meal, do not eat anything until your next meal.
Snacking between meals is one of the principal reasons why
attempts to lose weight fail. It is very important to break
this habit. Those patients with appropriate levels of "satiety"
do not feel hungry between meals. If you do not experience
this feeling, you should inform your surgeon. |
|
| |
| |
| |
| Rule Nº 6: Eat only good quality food |
| |
Independently from the type of surgery
performed, you should only be able to eat small amounts
of food, so it is important that your meals are as healthy
as possible. Do not load your small stomach bag with “junk”
or unhealthy food lacking in vitamins and other important
nutrients. Your food must be rich in proteins and vitamins.
Vegetables and fresh fruit, meat and cereal are good choices.
Foods rich in fat and sugar are not. You can eat apples
and oranges, but try to avoid orange and apple juice. Solid
food is more important than liquid food. Liquid foods pass
through the exit of the stomach very quickly and will not
make you feel satisfied. |
|
| |
| |
| |
| Rule Nº 7: Avoid fibrous foods |
| |
|
For example, asparagus contains a lot of
fiber that can block the stoma or the exit of the stomach.
This is because this food cannot be chewed sufficiently
to cut it up into small pieces, and your saliva cannot break
it down. Fibrous foods should be avoided. If you want to
occasionally eat asparagus or other fibrous foods, you must
be sure to cook them well, cut them into very small pieces
and chew thoroughly. |
|
| |
| |
| |
| Rule Nº 8: Drink sufficient liquids throughout the day |
| |
If you lose weight, your fat content will drop. This produces
waste material. You will need to drink large amounts of
liquid every day to urinate more and excrete these waste
products from your body. Individual needs vary, but you
should drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water a day. Remember,
you must only drink water, tea or coffee (without milk,
cream or sugar). Moreover, you must keep your food and drinks
completely separate during the day. |
|
| |
| |
| |
| Rule N° 9: Drink only low calorie liquids |
| |
Drinks, even those containing calories,
simply pass through the narrow exit created by the band
or the stoma. If it you drink liquids high in calories,
you will lose little weight, even though you follow your
diet. |
|
| |
| |
| |
| Rule Nº 10: Exercise at least 30 minutes a day |
| |
This rule is as important as the other
nine. As physical exercise consumes energy and burns calories,
it is very important for successful weight loss.
Exercise can help you to improve your general health. Your
size can make it hard for you to exercise as much as you
should. But get started, even if initially it is very little.
The more weight you lose, the easier it becomes. Start with
simple exercises such as walking and swimming. Gradually
expand your program until you include more vigorous forms
of exercises, such as cycling, jogging and aerobics.
Increase your level of activity in the course of your daily
activities. For example, remain standing instead of sitting
down, walk instead of standing, go out instead of staying
at home, walk instead of driving your car, walk up the stairs
instead of taking the elevator. Remember that you should
always ask your doctor about the type and amount of exercise
most convenient for you. |
| |
| |
| |
Note: Although these rules
restrict your consumption of food and the types of meals
that you can eat, keep your diet as varied and balanced
as possible.
The previously described rules are based on the recommendations
of Professor P. O'Brien, of Melbourne, Australia, Dr. R.
Weiner, of Frankfurt, Germany, and J. Gabrielle Rabner,
MS RD, of New York, United States. |
